Applying plastic coatings is a time-tested way to add durability and functionality, and to provide added safety, vibration dampening, impact protection, and other improvements to coated parts and products. Dip coating and spray coating are the two most common ways these coatings are applied, but in some instances, spin coating, also called dip-spin coating, may be a more appropriate choice. Here are some guidelines to help you choose between them.
Dip coating is a fairly straightforward process where the item to be coated is heated and then dipped into liquid plastic. After the plastic sets, the coated piece is heated again to cure the plastic coating.
To perform spin coating, the parts to be coated are loaded into a porous basket. The basket full of parts is dipped into the liquid plastic to coat them. Then, the filled basket is put into a device to spin it at high speeds so that the excess coating will fly off, leaving just the coated parts. Additional layers can be added as needed, and then they are then heat cured in the same fashion that dip coated parts are set.
Spin coating is clearly limited to the size of the basket your facility can spin, and the size of parts which can fit into that basket. It is generally a great solution for coating small parts such as fasteners and other hardware components.
Dip coating is an excellent solution for countless applications. Some smaller parts that would seem to be good candidates for spin coating can produce poor results with that process and do better with dip coating. These include small parts that could interlock or nest during the spinning process or those which have deep or complicated openings that would prevent an even coating.
