Powder Coating & Cold Weather Resistance

Powder coating is one of the most durable and versatile ways to protect products and components from exposure to many environmental hazards, including the challenges of cold weather. Long-lasting results and improved performance make powder coating an excellent solution to reducing the damage caused by cold weather conditions.

What Is Powder Coating?

Applied by spray or dip techniques, powder coating involves the addition of a thin polymer-based coating to a surface which is usually heat-treated to bond and strengthen the resulting layer. The electrostatic nature of this process creates a particularly powerful bond between the coating and the item on which it is applied. Powder coating provides numerous benefits including protection from multiple environmental exposures, impact and abrasion resistance, sound dampening, insulation, and many others.

What Problems Can Cold Weather Cause for Metal?

Metal is sensitive to environmental temperatures, expanding and contracting as the weather changes. Exposure to cold can also make metal more brittle and prone to failure. Add in everything that tends to come along with cold weather, from snow and ice to salt and other winter road treatments, and you have a recipe for rapid, damaging metal corrosion.

How Does Powder Coating Protect from Cold Weather?

Powder coatings offer a protective layer, insulating vulnerable metals from many of the harmful effects of cold weather. These coatings can prolong product lifespans, enabling better performance over a longer time period. Among the coatings with the best performance in cold conditions are epoxy-, vinyl-polyester-, and nylon-based coatings, though epoxy coatings can be less tolerant of outdoor exposure. These powder coatings can add strength, act as barriers against moisture and chemicals, and offer protection from corrosion in cold weather conditions.
