Protective Properties of Polyester Coatings

March 9, 2024

Polyester is one of the most commonly used powder coatings, offering cost-effective, low-waste, versatile protection for countless items. Produced when certain acids and alcohols are combined, polyester is most commonly applied as a sprayed powder coating which is then heat-cured to become a permanent, protective surface over a substrate usually made of steel, aluminum, or other metals.

Benefits of Polyester Coatings

Polyester coatings offer a variety of protective benefits to the products and parts they coat. Some of these include:

  • Polyester coatings are effective at coating some of the areas that can be difficult to coat, such as hidden surfaces and tight angles.
  • No solvents or other toxic chemicals are required to apply polyester coatings.
  • Polyester coatings will not re-melt if exposed to high temperatures.
  • Low-cure formulations are available for coating items that are less tolerant of polyester's normal curing temperatures.
  • Polyester powder coatings are very smooth and even.
  • Polyester is physically very resistant to chipping, abrasion, impacts, and other hazards.

Chemical & Corrosion Resistance

Polyester has excellent resistance to hydrocarbons, fuels, oils, and other petroleum-based substances, along with hydrogen peroxide, and most solvents and acids. It can, however, be vulnerable to strong alkali compounds, such as lye, ammonia, lime, and washing soda.

UV Tolerance

Many plastic coatings deteriorate quickly in sunlight, but polyester withstands multiple years of exposure without yellowing or becoming brittle or otherwise compromised. Certain "super-durable" formulations can have even greater resistance to weathering and UV exposure, making them suitable for outdoor equipment and vehicles.

Customizable

Polyester coatings can be applied in nearly any color and in several levels of gloss from matte to high-gloss.
