Every fisherman has some go-to tackle for each season and every favorite fishing hole. While some prefer to use only live bait, many take advantage of lures, especially when live bait is unavailable or of poor quality. Since the 1950s, the range of popular tackle has included soft plastic lures made of plastisol.
Made from a combination of a vinyl base (usually polyvinyl chloride, aka PVC) and plasticizing compounds which add stretchiness and flexibility, plastisol is one of the most popular and cost-effective polymer coating and molding materials available.
Since Nick Creme made the first plastisol fishing lures in 1949, its use and popularity have grown exponentially. As he discovered, plastisol's natural qualities and versatility make it an excellent choice for fishing lures.
Softness & Flexibility
Plastisol is naturally soft and rubbery, qualities which make it a great material to imitate the texture and movement of live bait such as earthworms.
Colors
Plastisol can be virtually any color, including transparent, and many additional visual elements can be added such as glitter and holographic glitter, pearly or metallic looks, fluorescence, phosphorescence, and many others for exceptional customization.
Ease of Use
Plastisol formulations available to hobbyists can be used easily with regular household equipment and readily available molds to produce worms, jigs, and other lures and components. Biodegradable formulations are even available to better protect precious streams and waterways.
Customization
In addition to custom colors, hobbyists interested in making their own lures will find many materials and additives for ultimate customization. Some of these include:
