Powder coating is a layer of plastic powder applied on substrates using the electrostatic spraying method or the fluid bed powder coating method. The electrostatic process involves the use of a spray gun to charge the powder, and hence it clings on the part surface providing a coating. On the other hand, the fluidized bed method of application involves immersing a hot part into a bed of powder. The fluid bed method achieves a greater thickness compared to the electrostatic process. Unlike liquid coating, powder coating is resistant to weather, corrosion, and chemicals.
Unlike liquid coating, powder coating is resistant to weather, corrosion, and chemicals and can last for up to 20 years.
To increase the longevity of the substrate, pre-treatment is essential. For the charged particles to adhere to the metal part properly the surface has to be clean. If pre-treatment of the surface is not done, the powder coating is likely to chip quickly. Pre-treatment of the surface involves stripping any contamination from the surface of the metal to be coated.
How pre-treatment is done:
How are metal services prepared for powder coating? The metal is typically cleaned by either blasting, washing or wiping. Usually, this is enough for functional powder coating. However, for aesthetic applications the metal may also be pre treated by:
Phosphating - It is the most common method. It is meant to improve the corrosion resistance of the metal.

Etching - Chemically etching with an acid-based product for metal surfaces that are difficult to adhere to.
